2nd year Graphic Design students are invited to participate in a research project on your use of and attitudes to digital tools in your learning.
We need your voices to contribute to UAL practice and policy making in this area. Together we can bring insights from your courses into the conversation, which would be of great value to UAL. In return for your time, we would like to give you a £15 Amazon Voucher as a thank you.

Why are we doing this research?
We want to gain a better understanding of UAL students’ use of and attitudes to digital tools in their learning and creative practices.
What difference will the research make?
We will share the outcomes of the research with a wide range of UAL staff including tutors, course leaders and managers. This will help support teaching staff in the colleges as well as informing policy decisions about how digital tools and support are developed at UAL. As well as a short report, we will produce a practical online resource that teaching staff and students can use in their own practices.
Who can take part?
We are inviting 2nd year BA students across 8 courses to take part. This will allow us to get an understanding of how the use of digital tools varies across subject disciplines. As 2nd year students are in the middle of their undergraduate experience, we feel they are well positioned to provide insights into using digital tools for their learning
What would be involved?
We would like you to take part in a focus group discussion. There will be 8 students in the focus group – 4 from your course, and 4 from another course in the same subject area. You will be asked to think about and map the tools you use in your learning. There will also be a guided group discussion. The focus group will last about 1 hour and 30 minutes and will be audiotaped so that we have a record of what was said. We may take photographs of the visual materials produced, but not photographs of the participants. Participants will be given a £15 Amazon voucher as a thank you for taking part.
What will we do with the information?
The focus group discussion will be transcribed and if you are interested we will give you a copy of the transcript. The transcript will only be read and used by us and not be used for any other purpose. The information from these discussions will form part of our report. Visual material (maps produced) will be used to inform the creation of a visual resource for staff. The transcripts might also be used to write and publish articles in academic journals. You are welcome to see a copy of any articles/resources before they are published.
How will the information be stored?
The information will be stored on UAL servers, in a folder on the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design’s shared drive. This drive can only be accessed by members of the CLTAD department.
Will everything you say be kept private?
We will ask everyone attending the focus group to keep everything that was said during the discussion confidential. You can say as little or as much as you wish. The transcript will be kept in a secure place. In the transcript the names of yourself and all the other participants as well as those people who you mention will be changed so you will not be identifiable.
What if you change your mind about taking part?
If you decide to take part then this is your voluntary decision, therefore you are also free to withdraw from the study at any point you wish, without giving a reason.
Who are we?
Siobhan Clay is an Educational Developer – Student Engagement at the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design, UAL. She has worked extensively with students and led on the development of the student-created website Commonplace.
Charlotte Webb is a Project Manager (Student Engagement, Digital) at the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design, UAL. She focuses on students relationships to digital technologies, and ran the My Digital Life project in 2013.
